UTStarcom betreibt u.a. zwei Forschungszentren in Indien und China.

Qualcomm in deal with UTStarcom Qualcomm in deal with UTStarcom
By Chen Zhiming (China Daily)
Updated: 2004-03-24 09:08

The pioneer and world leader of code division multiple access (CDMA) digital wireless technology has signed a commercial CDMA subscriber unit and infrastructure licensing agreement with UTStarcom Inc, a global leader in IP access networking and services.

Under the terms of the worldwide royalty-bearing agreement, which was announced yesterday in Beijing, Qualcomm has granted UTStarcom a patent licence to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber and infrastructure equipment for use in CDMA2000, wideband CDMA (WCDMA) and time division synchronous CDMA (TD-SCDMA) systems.

"Qualcomm is pleased to enter into this agreement with UTStarcom, an industry leader in providing cost-efficient wireless communication solutions globally," said Marvin Blecker, senior vice-president and general manager of Technology Licensing for Qualcomm.

"Qualcomm's CDMA technology and strategy enables UTStarcom to extend its existing wireless solutions to carriers throughout the world.

"Qualcomm continues to build on its leadership and expertise in developing and delivering end-to-end 3G (third generation) solutions for all markets that enable broad product segmentation, product differentiation, and enhanced wireless applications and services."

Taher Behbehani, vice-president of Business Development and Strategy at UTStarcom, said: "UTStarcom firmly believes in the future of 3G CDMA and we are pleased to work with Qualcomm to help grow the worldwide 3G CDMA market.

"This licence agreement broadens UTStarcom's global wireless position, complements our existing 3G products and technologies, and opens up an attractive suite of applications that are synergistic with our personal access system (PAS) services in high-growth, developing worldwide markets."

With its turnover reaching 16 billion yuan (US$1.9 billion) last year, UTStarcom became one of the top telecom equipment vendors in China.

In China, UTStarcom has forged a tight relationship with China's two largest fixed-line operators - China Telecom and China Netcom, by providing PAS infrastructure and equipment. Both of the telecom operators have used the PAS service to increase revenues while gaining operational experience and customer relationships ahead of the actual receipt of mobile licences, expected early next year.

Earlier this month, UTStarcom Inc introduced its first dual-mode PAS/GSM handset to the market, which enables PAS subscribers who travel outside of their service area to make and receive calls on surrounding GSM networks.

Insiders believe that under the partnership, UTStarcom is likely to produce dual-mode PAS/CDMA handsets or even multi-mode PAS/CDMA/GSM handsets to meet market demands.

In another development, thanks to the brilliant performance of CDMA technology, the 3G standard has been winning increasing popularity in the international market.

On Friday, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's government said it wants to replace the two older standards in the region with CDMA2000.

Also in the European market, a committee representing European telecommunications regulators this week decided to allow the CDMA mobile telecoms standard to be used in certain specialized networks in Europe, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

UTStarcom erhält $85.7Mill.Auftrag von ChinaNetcom ALAMEDA, Calif., March 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom, Inc. , a global leader in IP access networking and services, today announced that it has signed contracts valued at approximately $85.7 million with China Netcom Corporation (CNC) to expand and upgrade its IP-based PAS (Personal Access System) (iPAS(TM)) networks in Beijing and the Heilongjiang Province. UTStarcom also announced that as a result of the strong demand for its PAS infrastructure and handsets, the company is guiding to slightly higher revenues, slight gross margin pressure, and reiterates GAAP EPS guidance for the first quarter of 2004.

(Photo: NewsCom: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20031229/UTSLOGO )

"As a result of the tremendous subscriber demand, China Netcom is expanding its iPAS networks for the third time in the Heilongjiang Province and for the second time in Beijing," said Simon Le, vice president of sales for UTStarcom China. "As the sole PAS infrastructure provider to CNC in Beijing and Heilongjiang and the dominant handset manufacturer, with more than 80 percent market share in these two regions, UTStarcom expects continued strong sales and subscriber growth in the provinces in the coming months."

Located in the northeastern part of China, Heilongjiang Province has a population of approximately 38 million people and a fixed-line penetration rate of only 31.5 percent. Currently, approximately 2.1 million people subscribe for PAS service in the province. UTStarcom estimates that more than 50 percent of the total population represents the target market for PAS service, as the demand for low-price telephony with citywide mobility is large in the region. In Beijing, PAS service has developed into a major revenue driver for CNC, representing approximately 60 percent of all new fixed-line subscribers. CNC estimates that more than one million people will subscribe for PAS service this year in Beijing alone.

Updated Financial Guidance:

The overall demand for PAS infrastructure and handsets in China continues to be strong and, as a result, UTStarcom is guiding to slightly higher revenues in the first quarter of 2004 -- in the range of $600 million. Handset demand and shipments also continue to grow with an estimated 4.5M units being shipped in the first quarter and total units shipped in 2004 to exceed the 16.5M units shipped in 2003. UTStarcom''s current PAS handset market share is estimated to be between 55 and 60 percent in China.

Gross Margin as a percentage of revenue is projected to be approximately 28 percent for the first quarter compared to previous guidance of approximately 30 percent. The revised gross margin guidance is primarily the result of continued weakness in the dollar versus Japanese Yen accounting for a reduction of approximately 100 to 150 basis points, requirements for more Yen purchases on critical components, as well as pressure on handset margins, which are currently running at approximately 20 percent. The company believes that handset margins will remain in the 20-23 percent range going forward and overall gross margins to improve throughout 2004.

UTStarcom''s GAAP Earnings per Share Guidance remains unchanged at $0.38 for the first quarter and $1.92-$1.94 for the full-year 2004.

The company is entering the quiet period and will not provide any additional guidance on the Financial Results. Major contract wins will continue to be announced through press releases. Q1 2004 Earnings Release and Conference Call is targeted for Tuesday, April 27.

Wieder 2 neue Verträge: mit Versatel und Softbank UTStarcom Signs $18.6 Million Expansion Contract for IP-DSLAM in Japan In Support ...

ALAMEDA, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom, Inc. , a global leader in IP access networking and services, today announced that it has signed an expansion contract valued at $18.6 million with Softbank BB, the leading provider of broadband services in Japan. The contract is for further deployments of UTStarcom''s AN-2000 IB(TM), a carrier-class IP-based digital subscriber line access multiplexer (IP-DSLAM) that is being used to enable the new Yahoo! BB 45 Mbps high-speed ADSL service to more than four million broadband subscribers in Japan.

(Logo: NewsCom: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20031229/UTSLOGO )

"Yahoo! BB''s 36 percent share of the DSL market in Japan continues to grow month-to-month as more consumers recognize the company''s strong reputation for high-quality, reliable broadband services," said Masahiko Yabuki, general manager of UTStarcom Japan. "UTStarcom''s IP-DSLAM solution enables Yahoo! BB to offer 45 Mbps for its ADSL service and attract subscribers who require high broadband performance for applications such as online gaming and VoIP. In addition, in support of their tremendously successful VoIP network, Yahoo! BB is also deploying our media and trunking gateways to deliver cost-efficient carrier-class reliability, stability and enhanced features to its ever increasing customer base."

Softbank BB: A Japanese Success Story

As one of the fastest-growing ADSL services vendors in the world, Softbank BB reached more than four million subscribers by the end of March 2004. The company introduced 8 Mbps ADSL data service in September 2001, attracting more than 100,000 subscribers in the first month alone. In August 2002, Softbank BB introduced Japan''s first 12Mbps service, which also provided subscribers with a personal mailbox, a homepage, and a wide range of value-added services.

Softbank BB is the first competitive carrier in the world to surpass the incumbent provider in market share. Yahoo! BB has achieved a dominant share of the DSL market in Japan among residential users, small and medium-sized enterprises, and small office/home office users. With high-speed content delivery made possible by UTStarcom''s AN-2000 IB, Softbank BB believes it offers the highest performance of any service provider in Japan.

In April 2002, Softbank BB added its voice-over-IP phone service, "BB Phone" to its successful Yahoo! BB broadband offerings. Utilizing the BB Phone service, subscribers can place calls within the IP network free of charge, while calls terminating outside the network, including calls within Japan as well as international calls, cost only a fraction of competing services. BB Phone subscriber numbers reached more than one million users just 7 months after the service was introduced and currently has approximately 3.8 million subscribers.
